Impact
COLiBRI is laying the foundations for a stronger, more connected European crop breeding research and innovation (R&I) ecosystem. By bringing together stakeholders, identifying shared priorities and developing a common strategic direction, the project will help improve how crop breeding research is coordinated, supported and translated into practice.
Supporting better decisions
COLiBRI will provide evidence and recommendations to help policymakers, funding organizations and research leaders make more informed decisions about future investments in crop breeding R&I. By analyzing research priorities, infrastructure needs and funding landscapes across Europe, the project will identify where collaboration and targeted investment can deliver the greatest impact.
Strengthening collaboration
A key legacy of COLiBRI will be a stronger European community for crop breeding research and innovation. Through stakeholder engagement, the project will connect researchers, breeders, farmers, plant genetic resources networks, industry, funders and policymakers, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange and long-term cooperation.

Delivering a shared roadmap
The project's flagship output will be the European Roadmap for Plant Breeding Research and Innovation. Co-created with stakeholders across Europe, the Roadmap will define shared research priorities, identify future investment needs and propose a framework for coordinated collaboration beyond the lifetime of the project. Together with the implementation plan, it will support more strategic, long-term approaches to European crop breeding R&I

Contributing to sustainable agriculture
Although COLiBRI does not fund or conduct breeding research itself, it will help create the conditions for future innovation. Better coordination, stronger collaboration and more strategic investment will support the development of crop varieties that are more resilient to climate change, make more efficient use of natural resources, strengthen biodiversity, and respond to the needs of farmers, consumers and society.
The project's activities and expected outcomes are delivered through interconnected Focus Areas, which together provide the evidence and tools needed to strengthen European crop breeding research and innovation.
